PSYC2242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Natural Philosophy
Document Summary
This is a course on theories of personality, and we will be dealing with the notion of theory. Two important characters: francis bacon (1516-1627) and galileo galilei (1564-1642) The word science wasn"t used it was called natural philosophy. The idea there was to use reasoning to discover what truth was, and a lot of it was to rely on authority figures (scripture, aristotle, previous writing, etc. ) The way they went about it was to use scripture or aristotle carefully to figure it out. It never occurred to them to go to the barn and just look at the horse directly. It was not until later that people started emphasizing observation. Create a theory based on scripture or reasoning. In a way, bacon and galileo wanted to stop emphasizing theory. With notebook assignment #1, we did not think it was odd that we began with observations.
