Document Summary

Chapter 21 part 3 | innate internal defense. Interferons (ifns) and complement proteins // attack microorganisms directly. Viral-infected cells secrete ifns (i. e. ifn alpha and beta) to warn neighboring cells. Ifns enter neighboring cells produce proteins that block viral reproduction and degrade viral rna. Ifn alpha and beta also activate nk cells. Since ifns activate nk cells and macrophages, indirectly fight cancer. Artificial ifns used to treat hepatitis c, genital warts, multiple sclerosis, hairy cell leukemia. The interferon mechanism against viruses: viruses enter the cell, releases its genetic material, forms new viruses, and can inject new cells to further reproduce, the presence of the dna/virus triggers the synthesis of a cellular protein. Interferon genes switch on, synthesizing mrna for interferon. 1: cell produces interferon molecules, interferons are released from the cell that made them, float around and bind to specific receptors on neighboring cells. Interferon binding stimulates cell to turn on genes for antiviral proteins.
