The norwegian rollo was the leader of the invaders and the norman founder. He was given normandy on the edge of france to protect. He had to swear fealty to the french king and be baptized christian. These norman influences remain preserved in rouen cathedral. St. michael became the patron saint, partly because he carried a sword. Rollo restored the monasteries, and returned the land to the monasteries to gain church and aristocratic support. 2 centers of focus of the norman territory: war and the church. Horses, chain mail, and steel needed for war, as well as timber.
