Architectural style dating back to ancient rome. Comes from the word basilius, which is the name for a public building. Christians built in the style of the public buildings for space. Anything built in marble helps with acoustics. Created by god through geometry, believed geometry was language of the universe. Romans built huge basilicas with vaulted naves from concrete, but the technology is lost, so most medievals can"t use it. Can build truss roofs which are flat. Matronae is a second story gallery for women built in early buildings. Need to develop styles that can withstand water, since the enemy of any building is water. Arcade of piers with pilaster columns combined, in what are called compound piers. In the roman style, built from stone with truss work. Romans developed aqueducts so they can develop windows too. Gothic architecture is inspired by ile de paris in france. Comes down to a separate apse from the building like a billboard.
