Yellow terror 1899: asian r&r workers stay after completion of r&r. Local media spread hysteria and prejudice during wwii. On feb 11, 1942 fdr"s advisors recommended military decide who to remove: didn"t specify who, fdr signed executive order 9066. Viii: german subs on east coast => problems w/ germans and italians, but didn"t remove germans and italians bc industries complained about losing workers. Hawaiian defense command = ltg emmons: 40% of hawaii = japanese, pineapple industry said no => don"t remove japanese bc workers, western defense command = ltg dewitt, hated japanese => definition: 1/16th japanese = japanese. Registration: gov didn"t know how many japanese were in us in 1942, needed to figure out logistics of removal. In 1940"s => japanese parents didn"t want kids w/ white people: had an italian gf. I wouldn"t be surprised to see it happen again. In times of war, the laws fall silent .
