Lecture 8. 1: reason and religion / witchcraft and ethnography. Witchcraft, oracles, and magic among the azande: anthropological accounts of human diversity. Boas: ethnologistsfind cultural forms distributed regardless of race. Malinowski: to dislodge the white man"s prejudice that the savage is unregulated, to show that his world is subject to a struct codes of behavior and good manners. ( argonauts ) To understand the meaning of human action in terms of the actor"s intention and context. To bring out notthe arbitrariness of human behavior, but the degree to which its meaning varies according to the pattern of life by which it is informed. (14) Evans-pritchard: for the zande mind is logical and inquiring within the framework of its culture and insists on the coherence of its own terms. (16) Ethnography makes the familiar strange to renew perception of it, and anthropology makes the strange familiar to further understanding of both.
