Africa centered neglect, omission of colonial coercive force: orientalism; christian view on islam becomes part of modern university discipline i. ii. iii. repression and submission no legitimate authority neglect of traditions of popular resistance. No harmonious society in africa; societies being powerfully remade by europe. Disruption of what had been existing forms of government; anthropologists would not mention that. Anthropologists didn"t comment on it b/c they took the village as their focus. Ignored the way that village had army stationed next to it; that it was part of new economy, new government.
