Majority composed of young, working men ("bachelor"s society") Social class structure and hierarchy is not as complex (variety) and structed as the one in china. Individuals who learned to deal with the "host" society rose to positions of leadership. Reason for formation: chinese associations formed to promote economic interests. Impacts of the chinese associations: helped transition immigrants to the new country, provide connections that they were used to having in china, etc. District association ("huiguan"): provided "mutual aid" to the new immigrants. Family associations engaged in particular businesses (bakeries, restaurants, etc. ) The rotating credit system was used to help open businesses, pay debts, etc. The chinese consolidated benevolent association (ccba) (the "six companies") Ccba made efforts to deter prostitution in the chinese community, encourage chinese immigrants to live moral lives, etc. Ccba provided social services, promoted chinese tradition and heritages, promoted chinese american interests, helped small businesses, etc.
