Document Summary

Solar system forms from a gas and dust cloud. Clouds of gas and dust are present in the milky way galaxy. The larger planets, that happen early on, are the ones with the most gravitational pull. All planets lie in one flat plane (the ecliptic) *pluto is outside of the ecliptic by a few degrees. Orbit and spin in the same direction (counter clockwise from above) *exception: venus spins very slowly and backwards. Outer planets: large, made of gas and ice. Four characteristics of our solar system must be explained by a formation theory. Dense gas and dust - 1% (by mass) is rocky/icy dust particles that could eventually make terrestrial planets. Interstellar gas and dust in our milky way galaxy. The darker regions of milky way is stuff between us/what we can see and the stars. Region between the stars - interstellar medium (ism) - medium is very thin and low density.
