Document Summary

Just as in individual atoms electrons occupy atomic orbitals, molecular orbitals are where electrons reside in molecules. The molecular orbital model depicts molecular orbitals as a combinaion (product of interference) of individual atomic orbitals. Recall that atomic orbitals are wave funcions the square of which gives the probability of inding an electron in a space around a nucleus. In molecules, molecular wave funcions, or molecular orbitals may spread out over several atoms of a molecule. This is how !! and bonding and ani-- bonding molecular orbitals are formed via the overlap of 1s atomic orbitals of, for example, two hydrogen atoms. A molecular orbital diagram is thus generated showing all the mo"s from their lowest to the highest energy. Their total number equals to the number of atomic orbitals of all atoms (a rule of conservaion of orbitals). Mo diagram illing each orbital with two electrons from the lowest energy up.
