Address the social determinants of health- communities, housing, social networks, environmental hazards (eg pollutants or violence) Leverage the strengths of community development - in particular, financing and community organizing/participation- to develop interventions. Use it as a way to increase funding for community development work= if we can show that community development interventions have health benefits, then those can justify additional spending. Integrating health interventions as part of a place-based initiative. Relies significantly on theories underlying social networks and social capital. Asthma is a key factor in educational readiness. Food deserts: food choices are structural, not just behavioral. Lack of grocery stores= higher costs for less healthy food. Barriers to creating access to healthy foods. Lack of knowledge about market demand, shopping behavior, consumer purchasing power, bias or fears of community. Healthy food financing initiative: uses cdfis to expand access to supermarkets and fresh foods in lower income communities.
