In the education system one first learns to read then to write, by the time one reached writing there were even fewer women. The stories in the book subtly shift to more religious, cloistered values as the lays progress. There are paradoxical values presented: christianity vs courtly pleasure. > during this time the british population settled brittany (maria refers to it as breton) > french in france were referred to as the franks.
