Wood frame houses are the safest place to be in an earthquake because they do not collapse and can move with the earthquake. In the loma prietta earthquake the marina district suffered due to softer soil which amplified the shaking. Also apartments with soft story buildings had much damage. Residential homes are the safest place to be.
