Prime example of polychromy color attached to sculpture. Prior to the time was the ideal of antiquity that sculpture should be blindingly white and pristine (and thus made of marble) Because the bust is wooden, it allows itself to be colored to better resemble the actual appearance of the person it portrays. Modern day viewers are often discomforted by such statues (color, wood) because the way they present a subject is contrary to what we are used to. Donatello was a kind of court painter to the ruling medici family. The medici"s were a very prominent, rich, ruling family that included members of royalty as well as clergy (multiple popes) Medici portraiture: many polychrome sculpture busts, also paintings.
