History of art 62 lecture 5&6 panel painting, fresco, and mosaic. Tooling and punching: little shapes or geometrical marks hammered into the panel before applying gold to give the appearance of depth. Polychrome: cannot derive material underneath because everything is obscured by a layer of color. Blessed agostino novella altarpiece: artist: simone martini, tempera on wood, 1324. Before laying paint, an artist must apply the gold gilding first (an adhesive sticks the gilding to the panel before being brushed flat) Majority of panel pieces are very thin because they have since been cut out of their original places to give them the aesthetic of thin canvas painting. Lines often indented into the panel/gold in order to give the impression of radiating light (gives a clear center of focus) The adoration of the magi: artist: luca signorelli, tempera and oil on panel, 1508.
