Non-finito: leaving sculptures unfinished in order to bring a sense of naturalism to a piece as well as the humanism involved in crafting it. The stone"s weight gives off the impression as residing within and as a part of the building, whereas a painting it easy to change and transport. The stone gives off the impression of illumination; it takes the light that it is given and practically creates its own light. By virtue of it being a sculpture, it can be viewed from multiple points, as opposed to the two-dimensionality of paintings. Requires the support of a small tree-trunk to balance out the stone"s weight. The hands are bulkier because michelangelo distorted proportion, intending the statue to be placed high up. Compared to the slaves from the papal tomb (also michelangelo: they remain unfinished, they appear to emerge from the stone.
