Said to begin with the destruction of the temple in jerusalem by the romans in 70 c. e. Actually started at least half a millennium earlier, communities throughout the hellenistic and persian world beyond. Sephardim: ladino (judeo-spanish) speaking jews expelled from spain c. 1492 - settling in ottoman empire, but also in portugal, holland, and elsewhere in europe. Mizrahim: oriental jews , mostly in islamic countries, often speaking a kind of arabic. Ashkenazim: yiddish-speaking jews of central and eastern europe. Most of what is stereotypically considered jewish (food names, occupations) is actually ashkenazic. Mark g. thomas, michael e. weale, abigailgenetics: Founding mothers of jewish communities: geographically separated jewish. Groups were independently founded by very few female ancestors. Went to israel and found families that identified as cohanim and discovered marker that was concentrated with people that identify with. Took genetic profile of non-jewish population as well - Confirmed that there is a distinctive lead syrian palestinian.
