LINGUIS 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Soft Palate, Vocal Tract, Postalveolar Consonant
Document Summary
What is learned by children exposed to english morphology: results. Children at age 4 have three plural allomorphs ([-s], [-z], [ z]), however they don"t know how to apply [ z] to new words. Where adults use derivation to create new words, often children use: english morphology compounding, the english lexicon, language competence and performance, language acquisition. Language acquisition is more than a built up repertoire of memorized utterances, because children can apply phonological rules to made up words. Girls are no more advanced than boys in language acquisition. Practice with simple sentences is just as effective as practice with complex ones. Normal talking: created by pulmonic egressive airflow (aka exhaling, more pressure = more intensity/loudness, airflow can vibrate the larynx, leading to voicing, consonants involve a constriction in the vocal tract, blocking or impeding the airflow. Factors in consonant articulation: place of articulation (x-axis). Closer to the left is closer to front of mouth.
