. asians are currentely the second largest minority group in the us. it began in 1630 when john winthrop came with a colony for the new england in his sermon he established racial identity. in 1790 a federal law was passed that naturalized citizenship was reserved to white peoples. early asian immigration began early, was known by europeans in 1778 by captain james cook. william hooper in 1835 sent to hawaii to colonize island and establish sugar plantation. > plantation owner caste system printed worker organization and divided camps based on ethnic identity more immigrants were also brought (chinese 1830s, portuguese 1880s, Japanese 1880s, african american 1900s, korean 1903, filipino 1905 and so on ) >system prevented unions and controlled land and ethnic groups harshly. plantations in hawaii had no competition with white laborers and the majority of people were. Chinese or japanese or other asian ethnic groups so there wasn"t as much racial prejudice as on the us mainland.
