MEDIAST 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: American Horror Story, Status Quo, Morgan Freeman
Document Summary
What role does the audience play? o. Celebrity cannot be created without the public playing a big part. Manipulation thesis - stars exist solely because the industry manufactures them, but what this fails to engage with is that not all manipulation works (a lot of people try to be celebrities, but it is something rare) No amount of publicity can generate public interest. Sometimes the audience responds differently than thought (ie. brittany spears) o o. Identificatory fantasies = fans desire of a star"s/character"s life. Celebrity can tell us something about the here and now (only celebrity with the tie to audience) But: industry choses stars based on perceived bankability. The industry proposes candidates and audiences pick from those choices. We turn events into stories (ie. facebook is a story-telling device - people relate their experiences, how their day was) We make meaning from stories (stories tell us how to act in certain circumstances; explain to us right from wrong)
