Originally a sect of al-qaeda in iraq. Over 40,000 foreign fighters have joined the fight in syria. Isis follows jihadist-salafism: pre-modern ideology based on an extremist interpretation of hari"a la(cid:449) Jihad: i i fra(cid:373)es as (cid:862)religious struggle agai(cid:374)st (cid:374)o(cid:374)belie(cid:448)ers(cid:863) Salafism: sunni purity movement: view selves as true muslims, shi"a (cid:448)ie(cid:449)ed as pu(cid:374)ishable history. Isis is known for extremist beliefs and practices: takfir, excessive use of violence and takfir shunned by many scholars. Some beliefs: restore the islamic caliphate of old, all muslims must pledge allegiance. Non-religious beliefs and ideologies: faith in weakness of democracy and western states earn followers, new stratagem: isis created an ideology instead of issuing fatwas, liberation of muslims by destroying sykes-picot lines, destruction of sites of cultural heritage. Is uses an extreme interpretation of sunni islam and establish itself as caliphate. Isis wants to create a unified muslim territory to enforce its extremist beliefs.
