• Asian American history
o 1763: First Filipino community established in New Orleans
o Late-1840s: California Gold Rush. A lot of Asian immigrants moved West (building permanent
structures, communications, and transportation)
▪ Asian immigration was slower than other immigrant groups
▪ A lot of fear that Asians were going to overrun the country because of the movement
of people (racialized nerves/fear) → increase of xenophobia
o 1884: Chinese Exclusion Act. Bars Chinese immigration into the US
o 1924: Asian Exclusion Act. Barred all Asian immigrants from coming into the US
▪ Asian immigrants provided laor, ut ere’t proided ay eefits (ie: itizeship,
land ownership)
o 1942: Japanese American internment
o 1965: Immigration and Naturalization Act. More South and Southeast Asian immigration
• Stereotype: a generalized or simplified representation made to stand in for a whole

thing
