Run by formula according to which some animal or bird or voice appeared to the supplicant & spoke with him. Gave him songs, mementoes, taboos & perhaps a ceremonial procedure. For that individual this thing that had spoken with him at this time became his guardian spirit . Vision quest also became formalized (across the continent) Also, a person who confers a name upon another chooses some phrase descriptive of something his guardian spirit said or did in his vision. Plains indian vision quest -- unique characteristics. East & west of the plainspursuit of vision - adolescence, - ritual & entrance to maturity.
