O-ki-pa : annual community event -- spiritual -- related to sun dance. People living on the upper missouri river. A time for the community to come together. Prayer, song, dance, vision quest, sacrifice, celebration. Map of mandan, hidatsa, arikara villages on the upper mo river. Gradually had moved upstream from the st. louis area over a period of about 700 years as the eastern tribes were shoved west, the western. Several non-natives artists painted the mandan & hidatsa. Catlin was allowed to live with them & see all of their ceremonies. George catlin -- by william fisk, 1849. Catlin wasn"t much of an artist, but a pretty good ethnographer who managed to get along with native people he met. His painting of the sacrifice lodge are the only images you will see; no cameras. He made sketches all summer, then went home & painted in with oils.
