There was a convergence during the cold war with all of the different islamic trends in fighting the soviet union. The post cold war period begins to have a breakdown between various components of the alliance. The collapse with the alliance resulted in the emergence of tensions relative to how to represent islam and how to relate to the new configuration globally. After the collapse of the soviet union, there was one superpower (united states) The u. s. war against iraq began to percolate the division with the islamic alliance. Massive split that occurred in regards to the confrontation with the u. s. 9/11 broke all of the existing structures that were put in this alliance. Osama bin laden defense happened when saudi govt invited u. s. troops into saudi. Osama believed he could defend saudi arabia if he could rally troops to the various parts of the muslim world and confront saddam hussein.
