Often given the title as shaykh al-akbar, meaning the great shaykh or the big shaykh. He was present during the 12th century 1165-1240. Deep discussion on mystical philosophy, sufi practices in relation to quranic text. Focus should be on the inward understanding of what he is writing. Takes each of the prophetic figures in the quranic text and constructing a tariqa to the define seeing them as a shade in the divine prism in which the divine promoted his message to humanity. That is what makes ibn arabi unique (rather than solely focusing on muhammad) Was in spain from 1165-1240 was a time of great conflict as the crusades were taking place. Attempting to navigate sufi spirituality in a multi-faith setting and constructing a way for communities that included jews, christians, non-faith practices. Because of this, he was accused of having lost commitment to the validity of islam.
