Revolutionary precedents: traditional dynastic escape hatch = peasant rebellion, 1789 . Ambitious: changed a whole society & culture. Seen by chinese as battering ram for imperialism. Inspired them to launch a revolution by seizing cities and retreating to: 1917 countryside . All communist party states came into being in the aftermath of war/revolutions: Collapse of tsarist empire in revolt against ww1 involvement. After a war of liberation against foreign invaders / domestic civil war. Consequence of red army occupation to drive out nazi invaders. 1945 : japan surrenders, china reunified under republic of china (capital is nanjing) 1949-56 : continuing revolution under dictatorship of the proletariat . 1934-35 : long march, rise of mao zedong at zunyi conference. 1946-49 : 2nd cw, kmt defeated, retreats to taiwan. Mukden incident : japan claimed to be attacked by communists. 70% of success was attributable to peasants (mao) Collective ccp unit leadership (not just mao)
