POL SCI 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Stock Exchange, Panel Data, Time Series
Document Summary
Both large and small n have cases and variables. Cases are entities, often people, sometimes countries, states, tweets etc. Variables are attributes of the cases (age, education, income), gathered one point in time. Start with xs and add times, returning to the same cases and gather data in a different moment. Sometimes you add or subtract variable but you repeat at least one variable. Not a lot of waves (time1, 2, 3) because people drop out. Gives the ability to trace people as they age. How panel differs from xs: you collect the same entities at (a) different moment(s) in time, repeating orr adding some variables. Examples: year, month, days, nanoseconds (year 1, year 2, year 3 year n) Example: attributes of the us in each month us time series. Entity whose attributes are collected over time (u. s. , c. t. , c. a. etc. ) Fresh xs at time 2, 3 fresh set of cases, different group people, can be different # of people.
