POL SCI 137A Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Panethnicity, Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans
Document Summary
Ethnic cueing: invoking race/ ethnicity which may or may not be yours. 2 cues into this study (1) cominority and (2) cotethnic. Depends on the respondent - if they already know rangel: salience, if they do not know him: learning. 3 dependent variables (1) feeling thermometer- warmth toward rangel (2) guilt of ethic violations (3) donation to charles rangel cause. Researchers have a causal mechanism in mind (sympathetic, common bond) but it is not mentioned expressly in this experiment. Possible explanation for low receptivity of latinos > pan-ethnicity (need to differentiate between mexican americans, cubanos etc. ) Blacks may vote against their personal financial interests to help their community (coethnic), effect stronger than in the latino community. Limitation: did not explore deep enough a pan-ethnic subgroup designation (difficult to do to obtain statistically significant results) Moderators as mexican american subgroups/ cuban american subgroup etc. Researchers recognized that some respondents may be familiar already with the seasoned politician.
