Document Summary

Frontal: motor in the back => prefrontal cortex in the front. Parietal: touch, gyrus - two types of touch, homunculus. Discovered 2 areas where language is housed. Wernicke => speaking gibberish but didn"t know he was. Area used for formulating what you"re going to say. Broca => knows he wasn"t making sense. Area used for ability to produce a sentence, articulate it. Determine the necessity of a region for a certain cognitive processes. Electroencephalogram (eec) in 1920"s studies takes advantage of electrical charges due to action potential. Issue: spatial resolution - big area we"re looking at. Look at which part of the brain lit up. Gets hundreds of read outs to average out. Valuable because: less invasive, larger samples of patients, better spatial res, detect when brain is activated to the millisecond, etc. Knocks out part of the brain => see what ability is lost. Pings are different based on whether blood in cells are oxygenated or not.
