The problem about hais in the us: in any given day, about 1 in 25 hospital patients has at least one infectious disease who didn"t originally have that disease. Hotel dieu, family hospital, largest hospital around 17th century: wounds washed with sponge that was shared, morality after amputation was ~60, puerperal fever was common. British hospitals: clean sheets per patient, clean ones every 3 weeks. Childbed fever: 1850, patient in english hospital was less likely to survive than a combatant in battle of waterloo.
