They look to truth as being truth as something adequate to the world. It is impossible for something more perfect to come from something less perfect. So descartes did not come up with this more perfect idea, it came to him externally. Logos: reasoning that the audience is expected to accept. Pathos: attempts to dispose the audience to the subject. Ethos: the ways pascal establishes himself as a credible speaker. If you act in such a way to foster a belief in god, you will come to believe in god. 1: there is no earthly cost to fostering a belief in god, and no earthly cost in not fostering. It is equally likely that god exists as god doesn"t exist.
