Marriage to tainas encouraged > wives were baptized and took spanish names, attended spanish churches and adopted spanish dress styles. Spanish patriotism (1) way of checking power of new world nobles (reigning in the power of conquistadores (2) justify impartation of african slaves. Way of valorizing superiority of european military technologies, tactics and culture.
