Higher-level courses may be rejected by ingroup peers. Shows that it"s not about oppositional culture. Black adolescent peer culture & high achievement. Black students who perform well, academically, respected by peers. Peers commented on difficulty of courses - didn"t isolate - recognition of difficulty and what it takes to be in those courses.
