ASTR 2010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Curved Mirror, Virtual Image, Real Image
Document Summary
Review questions: why do we say that an image is an illusion, we see objects because of reflection and the distorted appearance of things seen in water testifies to the fact that light can be refracted. Although the conscious part of our minds recognizes that light can be reflected and refracted, it is easy to be deceived about the true positions of things. When we look at the legs of someone standing in shallow water, they appear shorter than they do in air because light going from water into air is refracted. A positive lens is equivalent to a concave mirror. By itself, it can produce magnified virtual images as well as magnified and de- magnified real images. A diverging (negative) lens causes parallel light rays to diverge (spread) after passage and by itself is capable of producing de-magnified virtual images. The simple magnifier is called the eyepiece because you look through it directly.
