Some methods: brief summaries in the margins, listing/numbering ideas, making sketches/charts to help explain the text, noting your confusion so that you can go back and see if it was answered. Looking back at weird words and phrases that you"ve never seen before and finding out what they mean is crucial to understanding the real meaning of the text: underlining/highlighting.
