Sociology- the study of human behavior in society. Sociologists study people and how society affects behavior, use a scientific way of looking at the effects. Social institutions- things that influence the way we think ex. family, religion and government. Sociological perspective- ability to see patterns of influence on individuals and groups. Social imagination- coined by c. w. mills, ability to connect the most basic intimate aspects of an individual"s life. Troubles- privately felt problems from events or feelings in one persons life. Issues- events that effect large numbers of people and have their origins in institutional arrangements and history of society. Discovering unsettling facts- things that we believe to be true but are not supported by research. Debunking- looking behind the fa ades of everyday life. Establishing critical distance- detach one"s self from a situation and view it critically, outside but active participant. Significance of diversity- central theme studied by sociologists, variety of experiences from differing factors and shape society.
