ANTH 242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Catecholamine, Caffeine, Westernization
Document Summary
Natural experimental design highlighting between group comparisons among sub-populations. Results of the 1981 study: -baseline (overnight) and midday catecholamine levels are higher in more modernized samoan men. Modernized samoan men (urban) also have greater changes in catecholamines from overnight to mid-morning. More modern samoan men have higher bp and there is a relationship between their higher bp and higher catecholamine excretion. Changes in catecholamine excretion are predicted mostly by morning food, caffeine, and cigarette consumption. Changes in catecholamines are also higher on friday and saturday as opposed to the rest of the week. 1986 study: -compared samoan populations living in 3 places: -western samoa. 1986 data collection: -collected timed urines overnight (8 hours), over the morning (3 hours), and in the afternoon (3 hours). Also collected lifestyle data as well, similar to what was collected in the 1981 study. Results of the 1986 study: -men in hawaii have the highest catecholamine levels.
