BIOL 118 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Punnett Square, Genetic Testing, Zygosity
Document Summary
Genetics is the study of how hereditary information is passed from parent to offspring. Heredity is the passing of genetic information from one generation to the next through reproduction. It will have some of the greatest impact in your future lives. Monk who studied inheritance in pea plants 1857-1865. Choose pea plants because they are easy to grow, easy to observe changes, and can get large numbers. Alleles are a different form of a gene associated with a particular character. Located at the same position on homologous chromosomes. Dominance is the trait or allele that is expressed (shown), usually represented by a capital letter. Recessive is an allele that is present but not expressed, represented by lower case letter. Genotype is genetic makeup on an individual. Homozygous when both alleles for a trait are the same. Heterozygous when two alleles for the trait are different (hybrid)
