BIOL 319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Rickettsia Prowazekii, Staphylococcus Epidermidis, Opportunistic Infection
Document Summary
Ectoparasites: live on the surface of the host (ex. flea, lice, fungus) Endoparasites: live inside the body of host. Indigenous microbiota are the microbes that normally reside permanently on and in the body. Some parts of the body are microbe free. Protect body by occupying areas of the body in place of pathogens. Produce acidic environments that prevent pathogens from colonizing. Produce bacteriocins, which are compounds certain bacteria can produce against other disease. Resident microbiome is very diverse and specific to the environment they grow in, making them very difficult to culture in lab. Transient microbiota: present only in certain conditions in any area resident microbiota can be found. They are usually parasitic or antagonistic between other microorganisms and/or host. Compete with normal microbiota to take over environments. Probiotics: simulate microbiota and outcompete the transient microbiota pathogens that may be harmful.
