Mostly marine but also some fw and terrestrial. Mouthpart with pair of mandibles and 2 pairs of maxillae. Each body segment has some kind of appendage (1 pair) In many, the walking legs have lost one branch and become uniramous. Appendages modified on different segments for different functions (ex: crayfish) Use gills to obtain oxygen for larger animals. Segments combined various ways into tagmata- most have head, thorax, abdomen, may also have anterior rostrum and a telson posteriorly. Head cuticle may spread out to cover much of the thorax, which is called carapace. Internally: most of the body cavity is hemocoel which is a blood sinus. Heart -> arteries -> sinuses -> veins-> heart. 1 way valve to keep blood moving 1 way. Salts and waters are reabsorbed as needed in green gland. Any excretion is done at the base of antennae. Extra ganglia for controlling things like- driving digestive system.
