1 Introduction:
Dr.Kulsoom Ghias,Bachelors in Computer science from Mohammad Ali Jinnah
University,Masters in Computer science from King Fahd University of Petroleum
and Minerals,Phd in Computer science from King Abdullah University of Sci-
ence and Technology, discussed some insights of theoretical computer science. His
work involves databases and algorithms as well. Now,he works at Habib Uni-
versity as an assistant professor. His work on decision tree construction and
optimization and especially multi-stage and bi-criteria optimization have led
to many diļ¬€erent applications in various ļ¬elds such as machine learning/data
mining and knowledge representation, analysis of Boolean functions, diagnosis
of faults in circuits, etc. His research interests are: design and analysis of eļ¬ƒcient
algorithms, graph theory, discrete and combinatorial optimization, and machine
learning/data mining.[1]
2 Cancer:
Structuring her talk as a history of human understanding of the disease, Dr.
Ghias took the students through the why, what and how of cancer. Breaking
down the basics of cancerology, Dr. Ghias started her lecture by describing the
building blocks of human life ā€“ our DNA (or DeoxyriboNucleicAcid). Within a
few slides, she explained how DNA molecules, constantly communicating with
each other from inside trillions of cells, sustain all biological systems. Cancer,
she explained, happens when this system stops working and communicating the
way it is supposed to ā€“ i.e., a mutation in some cells causes them to start behav-
ing abnormally and ā€˜rebelā€™ against the rest of the system. Having established the
fundamentals, she then described the history of cancer studies and the develop-
ments and advancements in the so-called ā€˜warā€™ against cancer, initiated by US
President Richard Nixon in 1971. She was quite candid in stating that the work
is far from done; that a concerted eļ¬€ort is required from researchers and pro-
fessionals from across diļ¬€erent ļ¬elds ā€“ including communications, engineering,
medicine and so on ā€“ if serious advances are to be made.
