Week 12 readings:
• Political activity really picks up pace at this point in time.
• Political tactics employed in south asia really are in some ways the legacy of Gandhi and
post-war nationalism. Whether you belong to jamat-islami, PPP, nawaz sharif etc, youre
generally using tactics introduced by Gandhi – eg hunger strike, protests, boycott
products eg Israeli goods, etc.
• Its imp to see the genealogy of certain ideas and practices.
• What happens in the 192’s i idia? After 9’s –
• Ho does gadhi’s satyagraha ed? Called off after hauri haura
• Revolution - mustafa kemal attaturk abolishes the caliphate system in turkey, so there
was no longer any point for the jauhar brothers to continue with the khilafat movement.
Khilafat movement started around 1918 –
• 1919 – geeral dyer’s firig at jaliaala aagh.
• Challenge to the british power in the form of khilafat movements etc, was significant
even though it was called off in the end.
• 1927 – simon commission – what was wrong with this? Talking about electoral reform,
but it was an all-british commission, not a single Indian part of it.
• Reason for simon commission? Before there were montagu-chemsford reforms, which
did’t eet the iial deads of the atioalists, so that’s hy the sio
commission was formed, but it had another problem.
• 1929: Passage of the Purna Swaraj (total independence) resolution by the
Congress – dramatic gesture.
• Like salt satyagraha.
• Political genius of Gandhi – pick up sth that goes to the heart of the problem and
resonates with the masses all across the board, transcends religious/ethnic diffs,
everyone can relate to it (protesting against salt tax, everyone uses salt)
• Colonialism under siege – cuz all these nationalist movements really tighten the screws
on the colonial govt, and the colonial govt deflects these through diff forms, round table
conferences, commissions, cracking down on them.
• New actors – after the end of khilafat movement and non-cooperation movements 1922
and 1924, sense of hindu-muslim unity that was there before eg lucknow pact, khilafat
