How are we going to collect reliable info void of bias. We want to be able to control our experiments so that we can be sure that a handful of factors are the only ones affecting the results. Figure of the rivers: 1 deforested, one left untouched. Hypothesis: there will be more runoff if there is less trees. Potential flaw: were assuming that the only difference is the presence or absence of trees, we can not really replicate- we only have a sample size of 1. Example: joseph connell"s work in the intertidal. There were 2 dominant taxa(organism) that had distribution in the intertidal. Connell found it interesting that the 2 organisms were not interspersed- one was upper tidal, the other was lower. Connell experimented and found that one of the taxa couldn"t survive in low tides bc of desiccation. Realized niche is the same as the fundamental niche. Realized niche is where we find the species.
