America did not own texas at the time; it was mexican territory. 4000 mexicans living in the area of texas, very sparkly populated, so the mexican government encouraged americans to plant. 1860, john quincy adams tried to buy it, saw how valuable the land was, but mexico didn"t give it up. However, the ow of americans were too strong. 1830s: mexico outlawed slavery and american immigration to thwart the ow of americans even tried to stop americans by troops on the borders. However, was not really helpful ending ratios of americans to tejanos: 5:1 felt that it should just be american territory. Steven austin: the man that spoke to mexican government about american rights dreamed that one day, texas would be us territory.
