PSYC 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sleep Spindle, Behaviorism, Memory Consolidation
Document Summary
Psychology started as a study of consciousness. Bc its not an easy thing to study-> turned to behaviorism-> The interdisciplinary study of the brain activity linked with our mental processes- cognition (included consciousness) (perception, thinking, memory, and language) Bc neuroscience, psychologists can study brain activity during sleeping and dreaming. The principle that information is often simultaneously processed on separate conscious and unconscious tracks. Perception, memory, thinking, language and attitudes all operate on 2 levels. Discovered by cognitive neuroscientists studying brain activity. Much of everyday thinking feeling and acting occurs outside of our conscious awareness. The ability to respond to visual stimuli without consciously perceiving them- this condition can occur after certain types of brain damage. Suggests-> vision: a dual processing system ; operates on 2 tracks - Visual perception track: that enable us to recognize things and to plan future actions (think about the world) Visual action track that activates our moment to moment movements.
