PSYC 330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Mucous Membrane, Suppository, Everytime
Document Summary
Some drugs have solubility issues or don"t do well in acid. Can be irritating, leads to bloody noses/sneezing. Next to inhalation, intravenous is the next rapid. Harder for body to move fluids away, so these drugs interact much longer and stick around much longer. Downside: people don"t like injections, it can be uncomfortable and most people are afraid of needles. Preferred when patients are non-compliant or unable to take medication orally. Water movement makes it easy for drug to spread in body. Disadvantage: can be uncomfortable and viewed as a personally violating way. Intensity of the drug"s effect depends on how its administered. Drugs taken in inhalation in injection peak quicker and peak a lot higher (see graph) , but last less longer. This makes snorting and ingestion far safer as it is a much less intense high and concentration of drug in the body.
