Schools segregation substantially increased during the 1990"s (gary orfield) In the south, most of the progress towards desegregation was lost between 1988 and 1998. The percent of african americans attending segregated schools in the us increased from 63% in 1986 to 70% in 1998. Latinos are more segregated than african americans. Most segregated schools are found in inner cities. Most affluent suburban schools are almost exclusively white; inner city poor schools are almost exclusively black and hispanic. Major reason for school segregation: residential segregation and students attending their neighborhood schools. School segregation not only separates children but leaves minority children in inferior schools. A lower proportion of minority than white students performs at, or above basic levels.
