Socious was latin for associates" or companions" of rome - think human association". Logos is literally greek for the word about something and later came to mean the study of". Sociology is the study of human association. Sociology is about interpreting the world (theory); about checking these interpretations against experience (research); and about being careful not to be deceived by superficial appearances (criticism)". Kellehear cited in beilharz & hogan, 2002: xii. At its most ambitious sociology attempts to understand human societies from a holistic point of view- what they are composed of, how they are reproduced over time and how they might differ from other societies". Sociology involves the analysis and criticism of society. The study of sociology will encourage you to achieve a critical and systematic understanding of society and your place in it".
