Document Summary

19th century (1800s) is referred to the age of empire. Lots of empires were built in the americas during the late 1700s. Colonialism shifts to asia and africa in the 1900s (imperialism in the modern. World) due to the industrial revolution: invention of steam ship, cotton gin, which is why england progressed rapidly. Products could be made w/ more precision and more quickly: many european countries followed england"s example in industrializing. Colonial powers seek to develop the colony as a subordinate trading partner. Lessen dependence on non-empire sources of food and strategic industrial raw materials. Wanted to ensure other countries couldn"t block their own development so each country would create their own labor systems and be as independent of other powers as possible. They conquered in order to defeat countries that they couldn"t fully conquer like china. England kept exporting opium to china claiming it was free trade and when china didn"t want it the opium wars started.
